Effect of hormones upon the production of ketone bodies by rat liver slices.

چکیده
Numerous investigators have established the important r61e played by t,he endocrine glands in the regulation of fat metabolism in the intact animal. The administration to fasting rats of anterior pituitary growth hormone and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) (1) has been shown to increase both the concentration of ket,one bodies in the blood and the rate of their excretion. Adrenalectomy, on the other hand, tends to have the opposite effect (2). Since these effects are believed to be due to alterations of the rate of ketone body production by the liver (l), it appeared desirable to investigate the effects of these endocrines upon the ketone body metabolism of surviving liver slices.

The effect of hyperglycemic-glycogenolytic factor on fat metabolism of liver.
It is known that hyperglycemic-glycogenolytic factor (HGF) and epinephrine accelerate glycogenolysis in the liver. The studies of Sutherland and Cori (1) show that they act alike on the formation of glucose from glycogen in liver slices. Fat metabolism is also affected by these hormones. For example Blixenkrone-M@ller (2) observed that epinephrine causes an increase in the production of acetoac...
متن کاملEffect of succinate, fumarate, and oxalacetate on ketone body production by liver slices from non-diabetic and diabetic rats.
The metabolism of fatty acids involves the production of acetyl coenzyme A and its condensation with oxalacetate for complete oxidation in the citric acid cycle. The availability of oxalacetate can determine the extent of metabolism via the Krebs cycle (1). In the presence of a low level of oxalacetate in the liver, fatty acid metabolism should produce an excess of ketone bodies. Previously (2)...
متن کاملA study of the effects of growth hormone on fatty acid metabolism in vitro.
As part of an investigation of regulatory mechanisms in fatty acid metabolism, a study was undertaken of the effects of the growth hormone of the pituitary gland. The well established ketogenic action of this hormone (l-6), its fat-mobilizing and respiratory quotient-lowering effects (7-12), its growth-promoting activity whereby the protein content of an animal is increased at the expense of bo...
متن کاملOn the metabolism of phenylalanine and tyrosine.
The metabolism of phenylalanine and tyrosine has been the subject of investigation for many years. Much evidence has been produced to show that in mammalian tissue phenylalanine is converted to tyrosine (l-5). Tyrosine can be oxidized to p-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid, which can in turn form homogentisic acid (5-13). Embden, Salomon, and Schmidt (14) showed that phenylalanine, tyrosine, and homoge...
متن کاملIndependence of cholesterol and fatty acid biosynthesis from cyclic adenosine monophosphate concentration in the perfused rat liver.
Cyclic adenosine 3’: 5’-monophosphate (cyclic AMP), when added in a concentration of 5 mM to incubations of rat liver slices with [1-Wlacetate or [l-W]octanoate, was found to depress markedly both cholesterol and fatty acid biosynthesis but not CO2 or ketone body production. The inhibitory effects of the nucleotide were lost when its concentration was reduced to 0.5 mM. These findings, therefor...
